The story
before the object.

Xianju's pierced-paper lantern tradition is associated with Potan in Zhejiang. Heritage accounts say its structure and technique matured during the Ming and Qing periods. A Tang origin is described as a tradition, not a secure date. Its distinctive construction joins paper panels without an internal supporting frame, while pierced patterns become visible through light.

What to look for

Look for the relationship between holes, paper and empty space. The pattern can seem restrained in daylight and become vivid when illuminated. The structure matters as much as the ornament.

A place in your life

A small light to gather around

A lantern changes the feeling of a room without asking for much space. Picture a meal winding down, the larger lights dimmed, and one small glow still on the table. Making the shade together can become part of the occasion before the occasion begins.

A contemporary invitation from the studio

See the pattern come to light

An introductory design could use prepared perforated panels and a tested LED light. Assemble the paper first and test stability. Use no candle or open flame. A modern kit must be developed and checked before it can be offered.

A finished piece to keep

Decorative lanterns and small lampshades.

An experience to develop

Prepared paper panels to fold and assemble around an appropriate LED light. Structure and heat compatibility must be tested before a kit is offered.

Through an illustrator’s eyes

Patterns designed for light, panel layouts and a clear assembly sequence.

These are development ideas. Products, kits and video classes are not currently offered for purchase.
