The story
before the object.
In Pingyi, Shandong, the Liu family practice continues a wider folk tradition of transforming paper flowers. A 2022 Linyi culture report records the name Liu-shi fanhua being formally adopted in 2013, municipal recognition in 2014 and provincial recognition in 2021. These are dates in the practice's recent documentation, not the invention date of all transforming paper toys.
Historical source (Chinese) ↗What to look for
Layered paper opens into a honeycomb structure. Folding and turning change its silhouette, so movement is part of the object. Constructing the paper mechanism and learning to operate a finished toy are two different experiences.
The images interpret the material and mood. They are not documentation of a particular maker’s work or a technical reconstruction.

A place in your life
Something wonderful happens when it opens
Some gifts are best understood in motion. Hand a closed paper object to a friend and let the shape appear between you. Its appeal is not a grand promise: it is the shared second of surprise, and the pleasure of trying the movement again.

Create a little reveal
A first workshop could decorate and assemble a prepared honeycomb unit. Learn its opening sequence without pulling against the folds. Record the same movement from a fixed angle to make a short visual story.
A finished piece to keep
Interactive paper objects and festive decorations.
An experience to develop
Prepared honeycomb units to assemble and decorate. Learning how to play with a finished piece is different from learning how to make it.
