Straw marquetry
Finding gold in the everyday
Natural straw grain catches the light like gold. Small cut pieces build an image with both direction and texture.

The story
before the object.
The national record describes Xiantao straw art as a practice of Hubei's Jianghan Plain, with local use recorded during the Qing Daoguang period. Earlier makers used it for celebratory and birthday decorations. Xiantao was added to the national straw-marquetry project in 2014. This regional account should not be treated as the origin story of every straw-art tradition.
Historical source (Chinese) ↗What to look for
Prepared straw pieces are arranged, cut and attached to form a picture. Their grain and direction influence the reflected light. The attraction is the transformation of a familiar plant material into an image with unexpected depth.
The images interpret the material and mood. They are not documentation of a particular maker’s work or a technical reconstruction.

A place in your life
Finding gold in the everyday
Turn a finished piece slightly and the light moves across it. That small change asks for a second look. A modern collage session can begin with this simple pleasure: discovering that beauty was already present in a material you had not paid attention to.

Make a leaf that catches light
Use prepared straw segments on a small leaf template. Compare pieces laid in different directions before gluing. Material preparation and cross-border handling must be resolved before developing an overseas kit.
A finished piece to keep
Framed collages, bookmarks and decorative cards.
An experience to develop
Workshop-prepared and cut material for a small collage. Sourcing and cross-border handling of plant material need checking before sale.
