Guangzhou pith painting
A small picture, a wider world
Colour sits on thin slices of plant pith, creating a surface unlike ordinary paper. Pith painting also has a history as an export art.

The story
before the object.
Guangzhou pith painting rose in the nineteenth century as an export art. Painters combined Chinese subjects with approaches shaped by overseas demand, working on thin slices of plant pith with water-based colour. Guangzhou's eighth municipal heritage list included the practice in 2022. The material is plant pith, not ordinary paper made from rice.
Historical source (Chinese) ↗What to look for
The pale, delicate support is central to the work. It changes how colour sits on the surface and how the finished picture must be handled. A botanical image can make this unfamiliar material approachable without turning it into an ordinary paper print.
The images interpret the material and mood. They are not documentation of a particular maker’s work or a technical reconstruction.

A place in your life
A small picture, a wider world
A bird or flower can start a conversation across languages. Look closely enough and an unfamiliar surface becomes an invitation to notice something you might otherwise pass by. For a contemporary gift, choose a plant connected to a place or a shared memory.

Paint one thing you noticed today
Practise your composition on ordinary paper before moving to a supported pith sample. Work small and gently; fragility is part of the material. A prepared sample and suitable guidance are more useful than promising an instant masterpiece.

An experience to develop
