The story
before the object.
In Yuxian, Hebei, painted paper-cuts grew from the custom of decorating windows. The national heritage record describes more than two centuries of development, with influences from regional New Year prints. During the early twentieth century, local makers helped establish its distinctive combination of cut detail and vivid colour. It entered the national list in 2006.
Historical source (Chinese) ↗What to look for
Look at the spaces as well as the paper. Cut-away areas define the image, while hand-applied colour gives flowers, birds and theatrical figures their character. This is why a coloured Yuxian paper-cut should not be reduced to a generic red silhouette.
The images interpret the material and mood. They are not documentation of a particular maker’s work or a technical reconstruction.

A place in your life
Colour for a new beginning
Imagine choosing a pair of colours for someone you miss, then placing the finished piece where morning light reaches it. A modest square of paper can become a way of saying: there is a place for you here. That is our invitation for a modern making session, not a fixed meaning assigned to every traditional motif.

Make a window-sized greeting
Begin with a prepared cut-paper outline. Test one colour on a spare fragment, colour a small motif, then mount it with room around the delicate edges. Write a personal greeting on the backing card.
A finished piece to keep
Small framed works, window ornaments and cards.
An experience to develop
A workshop-cut outline for you to colour and mount. Try a practice piece first: thin paper and water need a light touch.
Through an illustrator’s eyes
Illustration, colour palettes and a story for each motif.
